Firm Overview

Carter, Smith, Merriam, Rogers & Traxler began as a general practice firm in 1952, but Carter Law has since evolved into a firm devoted to complex litigation.

Its civil litigation practices focuses on complex commercial and business litigation, medical malpractice, and substantial personal injury cases. The firm also has an extensive family law practice with an emphasis on complex domestic relations cases and contested child custody cases. The firm also handles criminal defense cases in State and Federal Court.

The firm's senior partner, Rex Carter, is a retired Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives and historically has practiced predominantly in legislative affairs and appearances before state regulatory agencies.

Jeff Merriam handles the firm's criminal defense litigation, as well as general litigation and family law.

Tom Traxler focuses primarily on complex commercial litigation and family law and has written various software programs used by the South Carolina Family Court judges and lawyers. Mediation also constitutes a significant portion of Mr. Traxler's work.

Brook Fowler has involved himself in the firm's medical malpractice and personal injury cases, banking litigation, as well as other general litigation cases.

Katherine Tiffany's practice revolves primarily around family law litigation.

Travis Olmert focuses on general litigation, family law and appellate practice. 

Jeff Smith historically emphasized medical malpractice and large personal injury claims but has become "of counsel" to the firm.

David Rogers was focused on commercial and banking law and litigation but passed away in 2010.
